About FIRST
Inspiring Innovators with S.P.A.M.
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen in Manchester, NH, is a global movement dedicated to igniting young people’s passion for STEM. Its mission is to empower students to become leaders through mentor-driven programs that build skills in science, engineering, and technology, while fostering confidence, communication, and teamwork—values S.P.A.M. Robotics lives by every day.
FIRST in Action
In Florida alone, FIRST reaches nearly 10,000 students, with high school participants eligible for over $80 million in scholarships—a testament to its life-changing potential. The organization offers three progressive levels—FIRST LEGO League (FLL) for younger kids, FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) for middle schoolers, and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) for high schoolers like our S.P.A.M. team—each designed to grow with students from age 4 to 18. At S.P.A.M., we’re proud to support FLL and FTC teams in Martin County, guiding the next generation toward FRC excellence.
The Championship Spotlight
Every April, the season peaks with the FIRST Championship in Houston, Texas, where teams from around the world compete, celebrate, and connect. It’s a chance to earn recognition, build friendships, and uncover future career paths—goals S.P.A.M. has chased since 1998, including our 2012 World Championship win. This global event showcases the skills and spirit honed throughout the year.
Powered by Volunteers
FIRST thrives thanks to a passionate network of volunteers—parents, teachers, engineers, and FIRST Alumni—who dedicate countless hours to make these programs happen. At S.P.A.M., our mentors and student leaders embody this commitment, driving our success and inspiring our community. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a new enthusiast, your involvement can help shape the future of STEM with us!
